Upland Mesic Hardwood Forests Zone 9

Sometimes called xeric hammocks. Dense high canopy of oaks, hickories and magnolias on fertile soils. Fringe tree, dogwood, beautyberry, shield fern, coontie and partridge berry are all part of the understory. Sandy loamy soils contain good amounts of organic material and are generally underlain by limestone bedrock. Soils are moderately acid, fertile and moisture-retentive, with fair drainage. Plants require good soil fertility and moisture, survive hard freezes, and tolerate shading and minor flooding. Drought and salt tolerance is minimal. These uplands are protected from frequent fires by water bodies or topography, allowing for nutrients and organic matter to accumulate.
